Howard Carter left London on 20 September, reaching Luxor via Trieste and Cairo on 1 October 1928, finding all in order at Gurna. The laboratory reopened on 3 October, and work began on cleaning and repairing calcite vessels and ornaments. Lucas arrived on 8 October, assisting with miscellaneous objects until he fell ill with para-typhoid and was sent to Cairo on the 18 October. Carter himself suffered a cold but continued work. Burton arrived on 5 November to photograph finds but soon contracted dengue fever. Despite illness and setbacks, work on recording, cleaning, and cataloguing artifacts (including weapons found in box 370 on 24 November) resumed steadily until the season ended on 4 December.
The journal is a bound buff-coloured volume with a printed "Egyptian Government" label on the front cover board.
