Accessibility and inclusivity
Last updated: 4 November 2025
1. Our commitment
The Griffith Institute is committed to ensuring that our digital resources are accessible, inclusive, and usable by everyone, in line with the Equality Act 2010 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA.
We aim to make our website and digital collections accessible to people with a wide range of abilities, technologies, and environments.
2. Measures we take
- Following the University of Oxford’s Web Accessibility Policy
- Designing pages with clear structure, readable contrast, and responsive layouts
- Providing alternative text for all essential images and transcripts for audio/video
- Using semantic HTML markup to aid screen readers
- Testing pages with keyboard navigation and assistive software
3. Content exceptions
Some older archival materials (e.g. scanned handwritten notes, historical photographs, or legacy PDFs) may not yet meet full accessibility standards. We are working to improve these as digitisation progresses.
If you encounter inaccessible material, please contact griffith.institute@ames.ox.ac.uk so we can provide an alternative format (e.g. text transcription or image description).
4. Inclusive practice
We strive to ensure that our online presence reflects the diversity of our audiences and contributors. This includes:
- Using inclusive and respectful language across the site
- Representing global scholarship and contributors
- Encouraging feedback from users of all backgrounds and abilities
Please be aware that some material in the archives document observations of people and cultures using scientific research models and language from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in ways that may be considered offensive today.
5. Feedback and contact
We welcome suggestions for improving accessibility and inclusion. Email us at griffith.institute@ames.ox.ac.uk with the page URL and a short description of the issue.
We aim to acknowledge all reports within 5 working days.
