A transparent photographic positive fixed on glass and intended for projection with a magic lantern or slide projector.

The slides (a total of 632) are kept in a twelve-drawer wooden chest with brass handles and ink- and pencil- annotated labels by Howard Carter. They were made from photographs taken by Harry Burton and used by Carter in his lectures. The dimensions of the slides are 8.2 cm x 8.2 cm x 0.3 cm (h x w x d). The dimensions of the chest are 31.7 cm x 48.0 cm x 36.7 cm (h x w x d).

The slides bear labels with numbers written in pencil and ink by Carter. Most also feature a printed maker's label reading: "James A. Sinclair & Co. Ltd., Lantern Slide Makers, London". Three slides in the collection are hand-tinted examples produced by "Reginald A. Malby (& Co.)". The edges of the images are usually masked with black tape.
