Carthamus tinctorius L. (Compositae); Safflower.
The flowers of this plant, yield a dye, used in ancient Egypt
for colouring the wrappings of mummies (Woen.). The plant is widely
cultivated and often recorded as an escape, and is said to have
originated in Arabia (Herb. Kew).
The specimens examined r are <the> seed-like fruits, containing oil.
The fruits (and also the flowers) are said to have medicinal pro-
perties (Drag.).
