          Citrullus vulgaris Schrad. <[>Cucurbitaceae<]>; Water-
                                                                                        melon.

          Seeds of this species form the chief component of a 
number of samples.

          The plant is widely cultivated in the Me/<e>diterranean 

Region; spontaneous and cultivated throughout the Sudan and 

elsewhere in Tropical Africa (Herb. Kew)

          Oil and tar are obtained from the seeds in Upper Egypt 

(Woenig/<.>), and the fixed oil of the seeds is employed as 

food by the natives of many tropical cout/<n>tries (Y.B. Pharm. 

1925); in India also as an illuminant (Watt).

          The occurrence of seeds of a variety of this species in 

graves of the New and Middle Kingdoms has been recorded.
