Herbert E. Winlock

American Egyptologist and archaeologist. He received a BA from Harvard University in 1906 and was later awarded honorary doctorates by Yale University (1933), Princeton University (1934), the University of Michigan (1936), and Harvard University (1938). Winlock excavated for the Metropolitan Museum of Art between 1906 and 1931, except during 1914–17 and his military service in the First World War (1917–19). He worked at Lisht, Kharga Oasis and Thebes, serving as Director of the Museum’s Egyptian Expedition (1928–32). At Deir el-Bahri he continued Édouard Naville’s clearance of the temples of Hatshepsut and Mentuhotep, uncovering the Meket-Re models, the Hekanakhte letters, and material that advanced the study of the First and Second Intermediate Periods. He was Curator of the Metropolitan Museum’s Egyptian Department (1929–39) and Director of the Museum (1932–39), retiring through ill health.
