Bierbrier, Morris L. 2019. Who was who in Egyptology, 5th revised ed. London: Egypt Exploration Society, 341
She was born in Higher Bebington, Cheshire, 30 September 1878, daughter of William Munn Johnston, steamship owner, and Kate Christie. She married Percy E. Newberry (1868–1949) on 12 February 1907.
She shared Percy's keen interest in textiles, reflected by her involvement with the Embroiderers’ Guild, where she served as Vice President (1922–1945) and Honorary Treasurer (1935–1938). She accompanied Percy on his expeditions and lived with him in Cairo from 1929 to 1932.
She died in Guildford, Surrey, 21 February 1953.
According to Howard Carter's journal, Essie Newberry was also present at Luxor during parts of the 5th Season but it is unknown whether she was active on the excavation.
