Arthur E. P. B. Weigall

British Egyptologist and author. He was born in St Helier, Jersey, 20 November 1880, son of Major Arthur Archibald Denny W. and Alice Cowan, and was educated at Hillside School, Malvern, and Wellington College. He entered New College, Oxford, 1900, but left after a short residence to become assistant to William M. F. Petrie (1853–1942) on the staff of the Egypt Exploration Fund, 1901.
He was Inspector-General of Antiquities for the Egyptian Government, 1905–1914. He was closely associated with excavations in the Theban Necropolis carried out by Sir Robert L. Mond (1867–1938), and also with those of Theodore M. Davis (1838–1915) in the Valley of the Kings. He initiated the numbering of the Tombs of the Nobles now in general use, and assisted in their opening up and restoration. With Sir Alan. H. Gardiner (1879–1963) he produced the Topographical Catalogue of the Private Tombs of Thebes, later supplemented by Reginald Engelbach (1888–1946).
For his archaeological work he was awarded the Cross 4th Class Red Eagle, Germany, Officer's Cross of Franz Joseph, Austria, and 3rd Class Medjidieh, Egypt. He published many works, both serious and popular. He died in London, 2 January 1934.
