tunnel made in the rubbish in the passage, and this last robbery
took place only 10 – 15 years after Tutankhamen’s death.
In this latter or last robbery, not only did the thieves
ransack the anti/<e>chamber and the annexe, but after this they made
a small hole in the sealed door leading into the inner chamber, or
sepulchral hall. This is evident from the seals on the door, as
in the other cases, but so far as can be judge<d> at present, they
did little damage here<,> and it seems likely that it was when they
had just started on their fea/<el>l work here that they were discoved/<r>ed.
This sepulchral hall is where the work is now going on.
As there appears to be some vagueness in people’s conception of
thi<s> inner chamber, I will say a few words about it.
Leading off from it, is a storechamber containing many
be<a>utiful things, in fact Mr. Carter says they are the greatest
treasures of all, – particularly the canopic chest. This store-

may expect to hear all about the contents of it in two or three
month<’>s time.
The sp/<e>pulcralsic hall itself is four feet below the level
of the anti/<e>chamber and its wall are painted<.> and/<It> contain<s> a series
of shrines, fitting one within the other like so many boxes. How
many there are, we do not yet know<;-> <a>t least two, but probably five.
This we shall know in a week or two. The outermost of these
shrines is only about two feet away./<,> F/<f>rom the wall of the chamber<,>
gigiving very little room to move. This shrine is overlaid from
top to bottom with gold, and the sides are inlas/<i>d panels of
brilliant blue faience. At the east end of the shrine are great
doors. When Mr. Carter and Lord Carnarvon first came upon them
the doors were bolted but not sealed, so they slipped the bolts
