employed in the various stages of chariot construction. These 
workmen would include body-makers, who built up the parts in which 
the charioteer stood; carriage-makers, who made and fitted together 
all the under parts of the vehicle, on which the body rests; wheel-
wrights; smiths for the metal-work; curriers for the leather-work; 
trimmers for the upholstering; and lastly decorators, – the gilder, 
inlayer, and painter – who contributed to the elegance of the car.
          A great deal of the industry must have depended upon the selection 
of materials; for in vehicular construction strength, lightness,
and non-faulty material, were/<was> naturally of the greatest importance.
… was the kind of wood they used for the body. A straight and
tough quality of … wood for the pole.
          Wheel-making was naturally a very important branch of the industry,
in which rigidity, strength and lightness, had to be taken into/<was the primitive>
consideration. … wood was used for the naves, especially selected
… for the spokes, and … for the felloes. All these, as well as
those for the body and the pole, were made of straight-grained wood
bent to the required shape.

              THE PARTS AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CHARIOT.

          The carriage proper comprises an axle-tree and (two) wheels. The 
body, about half the height of the charioteer and not/<little> more than about
a metre wide, was made of <a strong> straight-grained wood bent to the required 
shape. A great/<large> portion of the sides, and the whole of the back of 
the body, were/<was> open. The uprights parts of the body, which varied in
shape and design according to taste and requirements, were tenoned 
and mortised to the under-frame. The under-frame comprised a rounded 
piece of straight-grained wood bent semi-circular, so as to form the 
sides and <the> front, the two ends of which were attached by a double tenon<s> 
and mortise<s> to a broad foot-board at the back. The foot board/<under-frame> was
fixed onto the axle-tree, and was supported by/<on x[?]> wooden “chairs”, or/<like>
kind of/<wooden> sockets, <which held[?] to replace> at either end, and <it was> lashed in place with leather thongs
