lid was of granite, painted

to imitate the colour of the sandstone

- the original lid one must

presume had been broken in

transit, or had not arrived in time

for the burial - and this one was

cracked right across the centre.

As it lay it would have been

impossible to raise it one fraction,

& Mr Carter had got over

the difficulty by pairing angle

irons right down its entire

length. To the ends of these

irons were attach he had attached

his tackle, and at either end he

had rigged a differential pulley..

 

The moment had come.

Mr Carter The chains were

manipulated by Mr Carter &
